The American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG) is a cooperative group funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and based at Duke University within the DCRI. It was established in 1998 to evaluate the surgical management of patients with malignant solid tumors. Of the 10 cooperative groups funded by the NCI to develop and coordinate multisite clinical trials, only ACOSOG has the primary focus of evaluating surgical technologies and adjunct therapies to treat solid tumors, especially in the early stages of cancer progression.

ACOSOG joined the DCRI in 2001 for collaboration with its strong academic environment and excellent faculties in biostatistics and clinical research. By working together, ACOSOG and DCRI provide disease-specific networks of surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists and the clinical research infrastructure needed to conduct excellent clinical research. The overall goals of enhancing patient care and establishing standards of treatment are shared by both groups.
