DCRI's Hernandez Wins Parmley Award

Dr. Adrian Hernandez has been selected as a winner of the 2004 William W. Parmley
Young Author Achievement Award for his study Outcomes
in Heart Failure Patients after Major Noncardiac Surgery published in the
October 2004 Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
The award, named for Dr. William W. Parmley, Immediate Past Editor-in-Chief
of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), honors two young
authors per year, providing each award recipient with a stipend to defray the
cost of attending an ACC educational event. The award is underwritten by the
publisher of JACC - Elsevier Science Inc. The nominee must be lead
author on a paper that was published in JACC in the preceding year, and must
have completed training less than 5 years before the date that the paper was
submitted. The papers selected best fulfill the standard criteria for acceptance
for publication, including the paper's originality, methodology, presentation
and importance.
The award recognizes not only Hernandez, but also the mentor for the project
and the research program. For this particular project, Dr. James
Jollis was the mentor. Drs. Chris O'Connor and David Whellan, faculty
authors associated with this paper, were critical to the success
of this project..
The Parmley Award will be given out at the ACC annual meeting in
Orlando in March 2005. The award includes a stipend of $2,500 to
attend an ACC educational event, as well as recognition at the Convocation
Program, at the JACC Editorial Board meeting, and in JACC.
Hernandez, the DCRI, and the Department of Cardiology will receive
a plaque that acknowledges this accomplishment.
