IMDMI Fellowship in Medical Decision Making

A two-year postdoctoral fellowship position is available at Duke University in Durham, NC. This fellowship is a collaborative effort designed to provide an outstanding training and development experience for an individual with a doctoral degree in psychology (decision sciences), public health, medical sociology, or medical anthropology.

The fellow will be sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Medical Decision Making Initiative (IMDMI). The IMDMI, which is jointly funded by the University and the School of Medicine, reflects Duke's institutional commitment to high-quality research in medical decision making and aims to promote better decision making by caregivers and patients. The core assumption behind this initiative is that better decisions reflect patients' personal values and are informed by the best available genetic and clinical data. The IMDMI's goals are to facilitate communication among decision faculty in different schools of the University; to promote collaborative research among faculty in different parts of the University; to identify and take advantage of opportunities for educating care providers at Duke on issues pertaining to medical decision making; and to aid in the development of tools to improve medical decision making at Duke.

The fellow is expected to apply his or her core research skills to the design and conduct of multiple projects. Opportunities to collaborate with researchers and clinicians in the Duke University School of Medicine, The Fuqua School of Business, and academic departments are plentiful. The fellow may also pursue additional, structured (didactic) training at these institutions. Both years of the fellowship will be spent at Duke.

Stipends will be $65 000 annually, plus benefits and travel support. A doctoral degree or equivalent in psychology (decision sciences), public health, medical sociology, medical anthropology, or a related field is required. Prospective candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample, and three professional references to the address below. The application deadline is January 31, 2007. The fellowship will begin July 1, 2007.
